About AIA South Jersey

Organization

AIA South Jersey is a not-for-profit membership corporation formed August 2, 1956.

Relationship to other organizations

AIA South Jersey is a Section of the American Institute of Architects, New Jersey Chapter and Region. Applicants for membership in the AIA are assigned to this Section if they work within the domain of the Section or upon special request of the applicant.

Domain

AIA South Jersey is responsible for all areas within Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland Counties, New Jersey.

AIA South Jersey's Objects

The objects of AIA South Jersey are to: organize and unite in fellowship the members of the architectural profession; to promote the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession; to advance the science and art of planning and building by advancing the standards of architectural education, training, and practice; to coordinate the building industry and the profession of architecture to insure the advancement of the living standards of people through their improved environment; and to make the profession of ever increasing service to society.

AIA South Jersey's Mission Statement

AIA South Jersey supports its members and promotes the public's understanding of Architecture through advocacy, education, and service.

Membership

AIA South Jersey has fifty-one (51) Architect Members, three (3) of whom have achieved Emeritus Stature, six (6) Intern/Associate Members, eight (8) Business Affiliate Members, two (2) Professional Affiliate Members , and one (1) AIA New Jersey Allied Individual Member.

Activities

The activities of AIA South Jersey include regular monthly membership meetings throughout the course of the year (excluding July and August) culminating in our Annual Holiday Party in December, regular monthly Executive Committee Meetings throughout the course of the year, a quarterly Newsletter, Continuing Education and Intern Development Programs, and our premier event, an annual High School Design Competition with awards and scholarships for the best student's work.

Officers and Trustees

The Officers of the Section are the President, President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and Past President. Each officer has a one year term of office and, with the exception of the Secretary and Treasurer, are limited to one term of office. The Secretary and Treasurer may serve two terms of office.

There are two Trustees representing each of the three counties within the territory of the Section and one At-Large Trustee representing the interests of the Associate/Intern members. The Trustees are each elected to a three year term of the office and each Trustee is limited to one term of office. The term of office of the Trustee is staggered such that one-third of the Trustee's seats shall be contested at each Annual Meeting. Associate Members may hold up to one-third of the total seats on the Board of Trustees (one position in each county).
